The rebuilding of Concord Sports Centre is expected to begin in 2026

Two sports and leisure centres which are set to be rebuilt in Sheffield will include facilities like spas and "health suites", the council has confirmed.

Sheffield City Council will begin building the new Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre in late 2026 under the city's sport and leisure strategy.

The facilities, in the Gleadless and Shiregreen areas of the city, will include "state of the art" gyms, wellbeing spas, improved sports halls and studio spaces, and soft play areas, the council said.

Councillor Kurtis Crossland said the plan was a "major step forward" in making Sheffield a healthier and more active city.

"The new leisure centres will ensure that everyone, regardless of ability or background, has access to top-quality fitness and wellbeing facilities," he added.

Further provisions are also being considered, such as NHS services, healthy weight support and programmes to help people quit smoking.

Rebuilding the centres entirely had been identified as the most cost-effective and future-proofed solution, the council said.

The existing facilities will remain open while the new centres are built on adjacent land.

Springs Leisure Centre in Gleadless and the Concord centre were described as "ageing" buildings.

Lorenzo Clark, partnership manager at Everyone Active, said: "This fantastic redevelopment project is hugely exciting for Sheffield and will ensure more state-of-the-art leisure facilities are available to local communities.

"The investment will help us to better support the health and wellbeing of residents through amazing activities and services."

Ten facilities, including the iceSheffield skating venue, Ponds Forge swimming pools and the Springs and Concord leisure centres, have been run by Everyone Active since January, after not-for-profit Sheffield City Trust handed back control to the council last year.

The city's Hillsborough Leisure Centre is also due to be rebuilt, although detailed plans have not yet been announced.
