Deliberate fire destroys parts of former castle hotel

Parts of a former castle hotel near Falkirk have been destroyed after they were set on fire.

Emergency crews said the blaze at Airth Castle was "well-developed" by the time they are called out at about 01:00.

The hotel, parts of which date back to the 14th Century, was a popular wedding and function venue before it closed since 2023 after going into administration.

Police Scotland said they were treating the blaze as a wilful fire.

The blaze left one of the former hotel buildings without a roof

Insp Neil Wotherspoon appealed for information about the fire, including CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage of anyone acting suspiciously in the area.

“We are also aware of a number of reports recently of people attending the former castle and hotel to take pictures and videos," he added.

"I want to stress, this is extremely dangerous given the condition of the building and no one should enter."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said there were no reports of any casualties.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "Operations control initially mobilised six appliances and a high reach vehicle to the scene where firefighters found a well-developed fire within a two-storey, derelict building.

"Firefighters have now extinguished the fire. However, one appliance remains on scene as crews dampen down hot spots.
