A woman has died after being hit by a bus in Nottingham city centre.

Nottinghamshire Police was called to Lower Parliament Street at 06:05 BST on Tuesday after the woman, in her 30s, was struck by a bus.

She was treated at the scene but died a short time later, police said.

Ch Insp Dean Gallacher said the road, between Milton Street and Glasshouse Street, would remain shut for "some time" as investigation work continued.

"This was a tragic incident and we are currently working to understand exactly what happened," added Ch Insp Gallacher.

Bus operator Nottingham City Transport (NCT) said there were "severe delays" to services and that temporary stop changes were in place, external within the city.

In a statement, external, NCT added the collision occurred after a navy line double-decker bus departed the stop at the bottom of George Street and was making its turn in to Parliament Street.

A spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with everyone involved and affected by this incident, including our driver who is being supported by the company."
