Affordable housing will make up 40% of the development

More than 200 homes are set to be built next to Shrewsbury Town Football Club.

Lands Improvement was granted outline permission by Shropshire Council planners for the 226 homes to the south of Oteley Road.

The development will be 40% affordable homes, and is part of the area's Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE), the applicant will also contribute towards education provision.

In a design an access statement, Omega Architects said that connectivity for new and existing residents would be a key factor in the site's layout.

A series of green corridors aligning existing public rights of way would be safeguarded in order to promote walking and cycling to local facilities.

"The proposal would help boost housing numbers, including affordable housing, which is a significant benefit," said planning officer Jane Raymond.

She said subject to recommended provisions, the proposal would not have adverse highway safety implications.

Ms Raymond added that in addition to a community infrastructure levy contribution of about £1m, there would also be a £1.7m contribution to education, as well as an east-west bus route, potential bus gate, and on-site open space.

The proposed development is part of a larger section of land which was granted outline planning permission in June 2015 for up to 550 homes.

Also approved was 23 hectares of commercial development, including a hotel and 70-bed care home.
