A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man died following an assault.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called to Matley Gardens, Totton shortly after 13:30 BST on Thursday.

The force said a 51-year-old man from Totton was pronounced dead at the scene. His family had been notified and is being supported by specialist officers.

The arrested man, also from the town, was taken to hospital for medical treatment. Police said he was expected to be taken into custody in due course.

Detectives remain at the housing estate carrying out inquiries.

The force said anyone with any concerns or information should speak to the uniformed Neighbourhood Policing Team who are making patrols in the area.

Two police officers stand guard outside a house with police tape stretched across in front and behind them. Some brown bags, a lamp and what looks like garden furniture can be seen in the driveway along with a Range Rover-type car. A white van can be seen parked on the road outside the house.
