Four months of roadworks on a busy city centre roundabout are getting under way.

Essex County Council says the Albert roundabout in Colchester will end up with wider toucan crossings and repainted road markings.

The local authority hopes to increase the number of people walking or cycling in the area.

"What we want to see is greater choice that helps make travel safer, greener and healthier for residents," said Conservative Tom Cunningham, the cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and sustainable transport.

"I am excited to see these key improvements at the Albert roundabout are set to get under way."

The junction connects Colne Bank Avenue, Cowdray Avenue and North Station Road and offers links to Colchester railway station, Colchester Hospital and the city centre.

Work will not affect the centre of the roundabout, which is home to landscaped planting designed by Beth Chatto's horticultural team and installed last year.

The project is being funded with money given by government back in 2020-21 - dedicated to creating new cycling and walking routes in Essex - as well as investment from the county council.
