A CCTV camera pole has been chopped down during its first day of use.

The camera, on Middlesbrough's Valley Road, captured images of two people arriving on a motorbike shortly before the unit was attacked with a motorised saw.

Cleveland Police said the sliced pole then fell on to a neighbouring house.

Acting Inspector Dan Oldroyd said: "It is senseless that a CCTV camera which has been installed to protect the public has been cut down and damaged, less than 24 hours since it was put there."

Appealing for information about the pair and the bike, police said the attack happened at about midnight on 9 August.

The pair then rode along Valley Road, on to Eden Road and continued towards Rosedale Avenue.

Councillor Janet Thompson, executive member for community safety, said: "It speaks volumes that there are those who would seek to destroy this powerful crime-fighting tool and that will only strengthen our resolve to further increase its scope and effectiveness."
