Firefighters tackling a blaze at high-rise flats in Liverpool have been attacked with fireworks.

A balcony fire broke out at a tower block on Primrose Drive in the Huyton area, shortly before 19:00 GMT, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) said.

Five crews went to the scene and put the fire out but were attacked with fireworks. None of the firefighters were hurt.

MFRS said a teenager sustained an injury caused by a firework and was being treated by North West Ambulance Service.

The fire service urged people to respect emergency service workers on Bonfire Night, adding that fire crews were out protecting our communities and did not deserve to be attacked.

MFRS said all fire engines were equipped with CCTV, and the footage would be shared with Merseyside Police.

Knowsley Council leader Graham Morgan condemned the actions of those who "needlessly risked the safety of residents and emergency workers".

"I am shocked and saddened that our hardworking firefighters have been targeted maliciously whilst attending a call out," he said.

"I'd like to thank all of the emergency services for their professionalism, under very difficult circumstances."
