A five-week road closure is being put in place to allow for repairs to a road which has had traffic lights on it for more than two years.

Motorists travelling between Baschurch and Myddle in north Shropshire have had to navigate temporary lights on Marton Road, following a landslip in March 2023.

Shropshire Council said the road would be fully closed from 09:30 GMT on 29 October until 17:00 on 3 December for landslip repair work.

Shropshire Council said access would be "maintained for residents only, when safe to do so".

A short stretch of the roadside has been marked off, at first by barriers and later by cones, since the degradation of the road edge.

The long-running restriction has become the focus of frustration and even jokes on local Facebook groups, with one user commenting in September: "The year is 2037... the retirement age has been raised to 90... Freddos cost £22, England still haven't won a World Cup... the DFS sale is still on and there are still traffic lights on the Marton to Baschurch road."

Robert Jones, the Liberal Democrat councillor for the area, vowed to push for repairs to be speeded up in June, saying they had taken too long.

The authority said all roadworks were "subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances".
