Resurfacing work on the 11 roads will be carried out next financial year instead

Resurfacing work on 11 roads will be postponed as Shropshire Council looks to save money.

The work, which included resurfacing High Street in Whitchurch, was due to be carried out before March 2025. It will now take place in the next financial year.

The authority's leader, Lezley Picton, said the council was "unbelievably close" to effectively declaring itself bankrupt, as it aimed to save £62.5m this financial year.

"In many cases we will have no choice but to reduce the level of service we offer – and this includes highways maintenance," said Dan Morris, cabinet member for highways.

"We will be resurfacing 36 roads this year, but we’ve agreed that work on a further 11 can instead be carried out in the next financial year, that is after April 2025, helping us to to make savings this year."

He added that each of the roads had undergone a safety assessment, and had been deemed safe for "one more winter".

Repairs would be carried out if necessary, should any safety concerns arise.

The eleven roads are:

  • B5067 – Prescott Road, Baschurch

  • B4368 – Corvedale Road, Craven Arms

  • C4246 – Mill Farm to Norton Covert

  • C4174 – Station Road, Albrighton

  • U3102 – Colehurst to Gorsey Lane A41 junction, Stoke Heath

  • U7268 – Richmond Gardens, Bridgnorth

  • B5398 – High Street, Whitchurch
