A man who knocked his partner out twice with a punch followed by a chokehold, has been jailed for six months.

Londonderry Magistrates' Court was told on Friday that Tyrone McLaughlin, of Carrickreagh Gardens in the city, attacked the woman in August 2023 after a verbal disagreement.

The 31-year-old was also ordered to pay her £500 in compensation after pleading guilty to assault and non-fatal strangulation.

Deputy District Judge John Rea said a jail sentence was required as the offences were "among the most serious before the Magistrates' Court.

When police called to the scene, the woman told them McLaughlin had punched her and she had lost consciousness.

When she came round, he had a chokehold on her and she lost consciousness again.

Deputy District Judge John Rea was told the woman was "visibly in pain".

McLaughlin made no comment during police interview.

Defence counsel Stephen Mooney said McLaughlin had shown "shame, disgust and disgrace" for his behaviour.
