A Falmouth pub's bid to extend the hours it can play music has been refused by councillors.

Simon Fudge, landlord of the Kings Head on Church Street, asked Cornwall Council for a licence variation so the venue can play music until 02:15 BST on Thursdays.

The pub is currently allowed to play music from 10:00 on Wednesday until 01:00 on Thursday.

Six residents opposed the application on the grounds it would negatively effect a special zone designed to limit the impact of pubs and clubs in the area.

Three of the residents told councillors about how noise was having a detrimental effect on their lives.

But Mr Fudge said Wednesday nights were now the busiest in Falmouth and his application would not make the situation any worse.

He said: "In the 15 years that I’ve operated two pubs in Falmouth I’ve never had any problems with the police or the licensing officer.

"I can’t control the numbers that come into Falmouth but what I can do is take some of them off the street, put them in a safe environment, provide extra door staff and generally do a good job."

Helene Boyse, who lives opposite, said sleep deprivation was having an effect on her wellbeing.

She said: "My life has been hell in the last few years."

The application was refused by councillors, who felt residents had sufficiently demonstrated that there would be a negative impact on the prevention of public nuisance if the application was granted.
