Two artists have completed a giant mural recreating a street scene from 1908.

Nathan Murdoch and Tony Nero said the black and grey painting on the side of a barber shop in Cowgate, Peterborough, took about 100 hours to make.

A combination of spray paint and brushes were used.

“It’s been amazing to see the reception”, said Mr Murdoch, 38.

“It was a challenging project - we didn’t estimate it to be so.

"There was a lot of detail that went in and we wanted to make sure we are being accurate in reflecting the historic scene."

Mr Murdoch also said it was “great” to work with Mr Nero, 67.

“I wanted to make the mural look more classy and Tony added the finesse and made it more like fine art," he explained.

The 23-ft-high (7m) artwork was commissioned by Peterborough Positive - a not-for-profit company which represents city businesses.

Peterborough Positive's chief operating officer Pep Cipriano said he was inspired after seeing a 1908 photograph of Cowgate on a postcard.

"The mural will not only pay tribute to our past, but will also be an eye-catching and detailed piece of art that adds to the visual appeal of Cowgate," Mr Cipriano said.
