Motorists have been warned of severe delays on the southbound carriageway of the M1 near Leicester.
National Highways said drivers faced delays of up to two hours between junctions 21a, near Kirby Muxloe, and 21 at Fosse Park.
Three lanes of the motorway were closed while National Highways staff dealt with what they described as an "infrastructure damage incident".
The lanes were reopened following emergency repairs but tailbacks of up to six miles (9.5km) remain.
Drivers have been urged to allow extra time for their trips.
