A new cinema, being built in Lincolnshire, is set to open in early next summer, officials have said.

Construction work for the four-screen cinema, two retail units and a restaurant in Market Place, Gainsborough, started in March.

West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) said work on the £9m project has reached the half-way mark, is "progressing well" and will be ready to hand over to the Savoy Cinema group in May.

The structural frame of the building is in place with the next stage including laying the brickwork and putting in the internal flooring.

Savoy Cinemas managing director, James Collington, said the cinema will provide local residents with the latest releases, classic films, and live-streamed events.

CEO of Gelder Group, Steve Gelder, the company leading the construction, said he was "delighted" with the progress.

The development is being funded by contributions from WLDC, the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP), the government’s levelling up fund and Savoy Cinemas.

The project will also have additional parking and a new walking link between Marshall's Yard and the Market Place.

Demolition of the former Lindsey Centre, previously known as Oldrids Department Store, was completed in June 2023.
