Cyclist hit by car on road closed for RideLondon

A cyclist received serious spinal injuries after being hit by a car on a road closed to motor vehicles for a cycling event, police said.

The collision took place on Ongar Road, Fyfield, at about 10:25 BST on Sunday 26 May during RideLondon.

The car, believed to be a silver Ford Focus, left the scene after the crash, said Essex Police.

The cyclist received four fractures to their vertebrae. Officers are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or other footage to come forward.

Essex Police said: "We believe there will be a significant number of people who will have witnessed what happened and we need them to come forward."

RideLondon involved several cycling races through Essex, London and parts of Hertfordshire over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

RideLondon's website said Ongar Road would have been closed to traffic between 05:00 and 13:00.
