Firefighters tackling a blaze that spread from a garden to a woodland area are likely to still be working on it into Wednesday, a fire service has said.

The fire on North Hill in Minehead in Somerset broke out at a back garden on Monday around 14:00 BST, spreading to the woodland behind the property, exacerbated by strong winds.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said crews from eight engines are working at the scene to prevent the fire spreading any further, and footpaths in the area are closed, including the South West Coast Path.

Exmoor National Park authorities have reminded people to be "extra cautious" due to the dry weather.

Multiple fire crews have been deployed to tackle the blaze

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We've been there overnight and requested more appliances and water bowers at lunchtime today to prevent further escalation and fire spread.

"We are likely to have a presence there into tomorrow due to the deep-seated nature of the fire."

A former firefighter distributed drinks and chocolate to help the crew

Adrian Rutter, who used to be a firefighter in the area for 12 years, said he knows how difficult it is to tackle fires through the night.

He said decided to distribute drinks, chocolate and crisps to keep the crews going.

"People don't realise how hard it is," Mr Rutter said. "They were very grateful for the chocolate."

Meanwhile, the fire service was also called to a fire at Watchet on Monday at 13:37 BST.

The service said the fire at Verdun Terrace, Old Cleeve, had spread through 18 gardens and 20 acres of stubbled, field and hedgerows.

One home and several sheds in the back gardens were damaged by the fire and 23 people were checked for smoke inhalation, the service added.
