It is enough to bring a tear to anyone's eye.

A massive onion - the size of a human head - has been discovered in a wholesale delivery to a chippy in Clacton, Essex.

Staff at the Fish Inn even christened the 1.13kg (2.5 lbs) giant, Ollie.

Lucas Lambrou, who has worked at the fish and chip shop for 16 years, said the onion was "three times the size" of the rest of the produce in the delivery bag.

"It all gave us a giggle, so we wanted to share," he said.

Spanish onions are usually much larger than English varieties, but are milder and can often be eaten raw.

But Ollie has a bit of growing to do to reach anywhere near world record size.

Guernsey gardener Gareth Griffin is believed to have broken the world record during the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in September, weighing in with a 8.9kg (19.7lb) whopper.

Ollie was discovered at the shop on 5 January by worker Megan Knight.

Mr Lambrou told BBC Essex that part of the onion had been chopped and the rest had been stored away in the freezer.
