A man has been arrested after an unknown liquid was thrown in the faces of three police officers in Leicester city centre.

Police were responding to a report of an affray in King Street at about 04:50 BST on Sunday when the liquid was thrown.

The officers were taken to hospital after the liquid significantly irritated their skin and eyes, Leicestershire Police said.

The 25-year-old suspect was detained on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and remains in police custody.

The officers were monitored for several hours on Sunday before being discharged from hospital, the force said.

While it is unknown what the liquid was, medical professionals do not believe there will be any lasting effects.

Det Insp Jenny Tattersall said: "While we don't know what the substance is at this stage and tests will be carried out, medical professionals have indicated that there will be no lasting damage.

"We know that there were other people in the area at the time the liquid was thrown and I'd like anyone who may had been contaminated with it to contact us – it may be on items of clothing, and that will be further evidence."
