Extra train services running more frequently are being laid on for racegoers attending this year's Grand National horse race in Liverpool.

Merseyrail said it will run services every seven-and-a-half minutes between Liverpool city centre and Aintree before and after the big race.

Before the race extra trains will run between 11:00 BST to 13:00 from the city centre.

After the meeting has finished the return services from Aintree are from 16:30 BST to 20:30.

A 15 minute service will run at other times.

Merseyrail said spectators should check the journey planner on its website or app for up-to-date departure times before travelling.

People are also being advised to buy advance tickets to avoid queues.

Entertainment is planned to welcome those using the rail network with "some surprises in store", the rail operator said.

Merseyrail staff will hand out flip-flops to anyone with sore feet after a long day at the event.

Suzanne Grant, the firm's chief commercial officer, said staff were "delighted" to provide a special timetable.

She added: “Not only are we providing a seven-and-a-half-minute service, but as usual we will have entertainment and fun at the main stations festival goers will travel through."
