A college is under investigation by the Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) after a student seriously injured his hand while using a mitre saw.

Reaseheath College, in Nantwich, said it was supporting HSE in its investigation.

It said the student, who is in his second year of a horticulture course, was using a compound mitre saw to cut wood when the incident happened.

They were under experienced supervision at the time, the college added.

They said the student was continuing to recover and had resumed his studies.

HSE inspector Summer Foster said: “We were made aware of an incident at Reaseheath College, Nantwich on 20 September 2023 after a student suffered serious injuries.

“At this stage enquiries are ongoing.”

A Reaseheath spokesperson said HSE officials were on campus last week as part of their investigation.

The spokesperson said: “As an industry focused vocational college, health and safety is of paramount importance to us.

“In addition to delivering industry standard academic and practical learning, our focus is on preparing students to be able to work safely - not only on campus but also during their work placements and future careers.

“We continually review health and safety measures to ensure best practice and are fully supporting HSE with its investigations.

“We cannot comment further on this particular incident until we receive a final report from the HSE.”

No details about the nature of the injury were provided either by the college or HSE.
