Parcel delivery firm Yodel has announced the closure of a depot in Greater Manchester with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

Yodel said it was shutting its national sortation and transport centre in Shaw.

The Usdaw union said it was a "devastating blow" to workers, with Oldham Council confirming it expects 350 people could be affected.

The authority said officials had been in discussions with Yodel bosses to set up a "range of support measures".

'Meaningful talks'

Yodel chief executive officer Mike Hancox said the decision was taken following "a comprehensive strategic review of our operations".

He said the company was "hugely grateful" for the support of our colleagues based at Shaw over the years.

Mark Todd, Usdaw national officer, said the union would enter "meaningful consultation talks" with Yodel to "interrogate their business case for this closure and seek the best possible outcome for our members".

Oldham Council leader Councillor Arooj Shah said: "Officers are working with Yodel management and have developed an urgent plan of action to provide support.

"Our specialist staff and resources are being dedicated to these efforts in areas such as helping people find new jobs, training opportunities, and linking them up with wider council and partners’ support services."
