A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance, police say

Residents have been allowed back into their homes after a "suspicious item" was found during a chemical search.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called and a 50m (164 ft) cordon was put in place after police made the discovery on Burn Steet, Longtown, on Wednesday.

Cumbria Police said there was no threat from the item found, but a controlled explosion had been carried out.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance and being concerned in the supply of drugs. He remains in custody.

Longtown Community Centre on Arthuret Road was being used as a reception centre during the evacuation.
