Parents will not be able to park outside the gates of a school at pick-up and drop-off times as a ban is to become permanent.

Chillingham Road Primary, in Heaton, is the third school in Newcastle where the measures will stay in force after a successful trial.

Residents, school staff, blue badge holders and the emergency services will be exempt from the restrictions, which aim to make the area safer and less polluted.

Newcastle City Council said "many people" had supported the scheme and there had been no objections.

Since January 2023, the streets around the school have been made into a pedestrian and cycle zone from 08:00 BST to 09:30 BST and 14:30 BST to 16:00 BST on weekdays.

School pupils carrying placards and teddy bears previously staged a protest in 2020 to try and stop vehicles idling outside the gates, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

A spokesperson for Newcastle City Council said: "During a public consultation on the trial measures, many people, including families and residents, said they supported the scheme and would like to see it become permanent.

"No objections to the scheme were received."

Chillingham Road Primary is the third site in the city where the measures are being made permanent – following nearby Hotspur Primary and Grange First School, in Gosforth.

A trial has also been held at another school in Heaton, Ravenswood Primary.
