A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm after armed officers were called to reports a gun was fired in a car park near Leicester.

Police were called to The Glade in Braunstone Town shortly before 10:00 BST on Tuesday.

A bomb squad and firefighters were called to the scene after a vehicle was found abandoned by officers, police said.

In a statement, Leicestershire Police later said reports of noises in the area on Tuesday afternoon were linked to the bomb squad’s activity at the scene.

No injuries have been reported.

A large police cordon which was in place with several surrounding roads shut was lifted on Tuesday evening.

Properties had been evacuated, but residents were allowed back into their homes.

A police presence will remain in the area, says the force.

The 25-year-old suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
