Volunteers at a therapy dog charity have said being sent to meet Bryan Adams just before he went on stage was “absolutely amazing”.

Kate James, a volunteer for Cariad Pet Therapy, and her golden retriever Max, visited Adams before his Cardiff gig on Sunday.

“It was really nice to meet him and he was just like a normal lovely guy. It was really strange," she said.

The Summer of '69 singer, who is performing at this year's International Musical Eisteddfod in June, then gave all four of the volunteers free VIP tickets to his show.

Kate said she and the other volunteers, with their dogs, had been with the tour crew for a few hours when Adams himself arrived.

“He just walked in, all blasé like, and then just sat down and then was fussing over the dogs.”

She said Adams showed all of the volunteers pictures of his own dogs, one of which he rescued from the side of the road.

“And then at the end he's like ‘by the way, my name is Bryan’ and shook all of our hands… as if we didn’t know exactly who he was.” added the 29-year-old volunteer, from Cardiff.

“It was mental.”

Fellow volunteer Lizzy Cronin, from Swansea, brought her black Labrador Kali and said the experience was “absolutely amazing... he was just so nice”.

“When you think of meeting someone famous you hope it doesn't ruin your thoughts of them but he was absolutely lovely.

“Really down to earth and he was showing us videos of his dogs. He loves dogs and he took the time for all four dogs that went up.”

Lizzie said her husband, who was “absolutely gutted” to miss out on meeting the man, had consolation when he was offered free tickets for the evening show as well.

“It was brilliant… really, really good. And we were treated like VIPs, it was like ‘let them through they are with the dogs’.”

Kate added that after everyone was offered free tickets they were all "scrambling about and stressed all day about who was going to come and pick up the dogs”.

But after sorting someone to pick up the dogs, she was able to take her mum to the show, which she said was "amazing".
