Boxer converting skittle alley into community gym

Ms Mitchell is spearheading the campaign to bring something positive to the area where she was born

A youth worker and boxing coach is fundraising to transform an unused skittle alley into a grassroots boxing gym.
Leanne Mitchell was born in Hartcliffe in south Bristol and has been given the use of the room in the area's community centre and now needs funds, external to kit it out and run it as a gym.
She aims to create a safe space where the community can train, grow and connect with others.
"We want to give the youngsters here a place that will help their mental health and well-being, and give them something to do with a bit of a community vibe," she said.

"I just think there's too much negative attention in the area. It's nice to bring something positive to Hartcliffe.
"This will help young people to make better decisions now and later on in life. Boxing teaches resilience, discipline and gives you a positive mindset."
The fundraiser has raised £1,000 of its £6,000 target in the first week, and its website page says: "Every penny will go straight into making Bristol Community Boxing Gym safe, ready, and open for the community".
Most of the money raised will be spent on gym equipment like punching bags, gloves, pads and specialist flooring.

Ms Mitchell started boxing later in life after doing judo for several years.
"I just know how much of a relief it can be to learn a discipline and use it as an outlet," Ms Mitchell said.
"I think it is a great skill to have, and it helps you with other things in your life as well."
If the fundraising is successful, a team of volunteers hope to open the gym at the Hareclive Road community centre by the end of September.
