Plans to turn railway shed into food hall progress

Goods Shed would be sold by the city council for about £250,000

The redevelopment of a historical railway goods shed into a food and drinks hall has taken another step forward.

Peterborough City Council has proposed selling the goods shed at Fletton Quays for £250,000.

Council officers have recommended that the local authority's cabinet approve of the renegotiated terms of the sale to developer Farholt Goods Shed Limited, which will also include handing the company a grant of £1.9m.

Mohammed Farooq, cabinet member for growth and regeneration, hailed the progress as a "key milestone".

The council bought the freehold for the goods shed building in February 2024.

A spokesperson said it forms part of a project known as The Vine, whereby £22.9m of government money is being spent on regeneration schemes in the city.

The sale and the grant is subject to various conditions, including that the developer obtains planning permission for the project.

But the council hopes the food and drinks hall will provide an affordable space for new and small food and beverage businesses, will encourage start-ups and strengthen the city's hospitality sector.

Farooq, from the Peterborough First group, said: "This proposal represents a key milestone in the ongoing regeneration of Fletton Quays and wider city centre, aiming to bring new life into a historic building, which while requiring significant investment, presents an exciting opportunity to provide a unique offer for people to enjoy."

Councillors will discuss the sale and the future of the building at a cabinet meeting on 2 October.
