Demolition work is due to start on a former shopping centre in Lincoln, amid plans for a multi-million-pound hotel.

Lincolnshire Co-op, which owns the former City Square shopping centre, said it was in “advanced negotiations with an international hotel operator”.

The retailer is also exploring potential residential uses for the rest of the site, which has been vacant since 2019.

Bulldozers are set to move in at the end of the month, with work expected to last until early in the new year.

Kevin Kendall, the head of property at Lincolnshire Co-op, said the company was discussing “a range of uses which will help bring the site back into use”.

The demolition work was approved by City of Lincoln Council in May this year.

The Co-op said an operator for the hotel could be named by the end of the year and a detailed planning application was set be submitted next year.

The City Square project follows a £7m refurbishment of the neighbouring Cornhill Market, which reopened earlier this year.
