Police have increased patrols near Northampton's synagogue after a terrorist incident was declared in Manchester after two people died in a car and stabbing attack.

The incident on Thursday morning took place on Yom Kippur - the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.

"We have put reassurance patrols in key areas as a result of this incident, including at the synagogue in Northampton," a spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said.

They also urged anyone with concerns to approach their officers.

Two people died in the attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester and a third person - thought to be the suspect - is believed to be dead after being shot by police.

It has been declared a "terrorist incident" by police.

Three other members of the public are in a serious condition, with police saying a "large number of people" had been worshipping at the synagogue.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ended a trip to Denmark early, and said extra police would be deployed at all synagogues across the country in the light of the attack.
