Christmas markets cancelled amid storm fears

The council said its decision to cancel Oundle's Christmas market was "agonising"

Two Christmas markets in Northamptonshire have been cancelled because of a weather warning.

Strong wind and heavy rain is forecast between Thursday and Sunday as part of Storm Darragh.

Oundle Town Council said "we're disappointed as [locals and traders] will be" by the cancellation of the town's Christmas market.

Northampton's Becket's Park market has also been called off, with town councillor Jane Birch citing the risk to attendees as "too great" for the event to go ahead.

The storm could bring winds of up to 50mph (80km/h) inland.

Christmas lights in Oundle would still be turned on on Friday night, the town council said.

Separately, West Northamptonshire Council said Christmas activities planned for Northampton Market Square on 7 December would take place in the Grosvenor shopping centre instead due to the weather.
