A section of a new link road connecting two city roundabouts has opened to traffic.

Motorists in Carlisle will be able to travel between Newby West Roundabout and the new Cummersdale Roundabout on the B5299 at Dalston Road from Monday morning.

The work is part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road Project which will provide a new route over the Caldew and connect the A595 and the A689 at Newby West Roundabout to the M6 at Junction 42.

Cumberland Council said the Southern Link Road was expected to open at the end of the year with some "finishing touches" such as landscaping planned for early 2026.

The new section of road has replaced the existing route between Wigton Road and Dalston Road, previously running via Peter Lane.

Cumberland Council said Peter Lane would permanently close at the Newby West end but access would remain open to residents and landowners.

Ongoing work to provide new access to Kingrigg Livery Stables has required traffic management and temporary traffic lights.
