A major route into a city has reopened after five months of roadworks, as efforts to create a new link road continue.

Newby West Roundabout, which links Wigton Road on the A595 and Carlisle city centre, reopened on Monday.

The old roundabout has been removed and replaced with a larger one that can cope with higher volumes of traffic, according to Cumberland Council which is behind the scheme.

The work is part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road Project which will provide a new route over the Caldew and connect the A595 and the A689 at Newby West Roundabout to the M6 at Junction 42.

Cumberland Council said the link between Newby West Roundabout and the new Cummersdale Roundabout on the B5299 at Dalston Road was also expected to open "in a few weeks", with a date yet to be confirmed.

Work to create a new crossing over the River Caldew is also progressing, with the remaining concrete pours planned to be carried out this month, the council said.

It added the Southern Link Road was expected to open at the end of the year with some "finishing touches" such as landscaping planned for early 2026.

The work also aims to support plans for St Cuthbert's Garden Village - a new community with 10,000 homes to be built over the next 30 to 40 years.
