A six-year-old girl has been injured after being bitten on the face by a dog, police have said.

The child's mum managed to fend the dog off after it emerged from the bushes and bit the youngster on the cheek before running away.

Merseyside Police said the child was still "shaken" by the attack which happened at about 08:15 GMT on 4 March in Everton, Liverpool.

Police were trying to determine the breed of the dog which was described as medium sized with black, short fur.

The six-year-old girl was treated for cuts to her face following the attack which happened on Hodder Road, leading into Mycroft Close.

Police said it was "imperative" they found the dog so it could not "attack anyone else".

Ch Insp Chris Carlin, from Merseyside Police, added any information provided would help the investigation and urged people to contact the force.

In the UK, it is illegal to own certain types of dog, including Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro breeds.
