Crews tackle 15 tonnes of straw on fire in village

The fire was in Stoke-by-Nayland, near Colchester

Firefighters have been tackling a straw fire in a village on the Suffolk-Essex border.

Crews were called to Calves Lane in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, at about 12:15 BST.

They found 15 tonnes of straw as well as a lorry and trailers alight.

Watch manager Dan Davis, of Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, said the blaze had been brought under control, and it was believed to have started accidentally.

A lorry and trailers were also caught up in the blaze

"Crews worked hard to protect surrounding buildings, including barns containing straw," he said.

"They got the fire under control and will remain at the scene into the evening to make sure it burns out safely.

"Thank you to the farmer who has been using his machinery to help to stop the fire from spreading and breaking up the straw."

Firefighters from Sudbury and Colchester are due to be relieved by crews from Leaden Roding, Wethersfield and Brightlingsea.
