A visitor experience where people can spend time and play with golden retriever dogs has had its licence to exhibit animals revoked.

The Golden Retriever Experience near Minehead in Somerset lost its licence on the grounds of "protecting the welfare of the animals", according to Somerset Council, which added it had breached its conditions and regulations.

Licencing Officers added "standards had slipped" since it was first given a licence in May 2023.

The RSPCA and Avon and Somerset Police were both involved in the investigation.

'Frustrating'

In a brief statement to the BBC, a spokesperson for the RSPCA said: "RSPCA officers attended the business location on 28 May alongside Avon & Somerset Police who were carrying out a warrant.

"An investigation is now ongoing so we can't go into any further detail at this time.

"We’re grateful to people who report their concerns to us but we cannot comment any further as we are unable to discuss ongoing enquiries about specific individuals and what action may be taken.

"We understand how frustrating that is for animal lovers but releasing information could prejudice a future investigation."

The BBC has reached out to the Golden Retriever Experience for comment.

The business has been told it can appeal the decision.
