Man pleads guilty to killing swan in park

A man has pleaded guilty to killing a swan in a park.

Michael Whittle, 20, of Stanley, County Durham, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Friday.

He admitted to killing the bird at Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, on 30 July and also pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour or words to harass, alarm or cause distress.

Whittle was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 12 September.

At the time, Durham Police thanked members of the public who "tried to intervene" during the attack, which happened at about 18:30 BST.
