A competition to encourage people to become more active and explore their local area has revealed its winners after its third "successful" summer.

The Beat the Street Game in Barnsley ran between 12 June and 23 July, and asked participants to walk, run, or cycle between sensors called "beat boxes" to collect points.

The council, which ran and helped to fund the event, said 22,297 players took part and covered a distance of 115,111 miles.

Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: "I'd like to say a huge congratulations to all our winners and to everyone who has taken part in this fantastic initiative."

The competition is hosted by Intelligent Health and funded by Barnsley Council, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, and the National Lottery through Sport England.

Higginbottom added: "It's been great to see so many Barnsley residents take part in Beat the Street across our borough once again.

"The winners will receive their certificates over the coming weeks, and players will receive a survey to measure the impact of the game."

He added that he expected the event to return again next year.

"It's a really important initiative, it makes a big difference to our communities and gets young people active - so it's something we'd like to see go from strength to strength," he said.

The initiative is part of Barnsley Council's strategy to improve public health and wellbeing.

More than 9,000 people signed up to take part on the first day of the competition being launched. Points are recorded on an app.
