A man has been arrested after allegedly driving with a person clinging on to the car's bumper.

Essex Police said the incident happened on Tenpenny Hill in Thorrington, near Brightlingsea, at 14:40 GMT on Friday, before the car came to a halt outside the now closed Fir Tree cafe.

Officers arrested a driver, aged in his 50s, on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and driving offences. He remains in custody.

The person said to have been hanging off the bumper did not sustain any serious injuries, police said.

The force said it believed the incident began at the junction of Moverons Lane and Church Road, close to All Saints Church.

The vehicle then drove along Brightlingsea Road, turning left on to Tenpenny Hill before coming to a stop.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw what happened or who may have dashcam footage of the journey to contact them.
