Guernsey pupils find out GCSE and Level 2 results

Pupils across Guernsey said they were excited about what their futures hold as they picked up their GCSE and Level 2 results.

Results from the exams were opened on Thursday with schools in the island praising the hard work put in by students.

Teenagers who picked up their results said they were pleased with the grades they received and were looking forward to the next stage of their education with many heading off to sixth form to do A-Levels.

The States of Guernsey said 608 Year 11 pupils completed the exams across the Bailiwick with 72% of all results being graded 4 or above, which was above the 67.1% figure in England.

Blanchelande College reported almost a third of its pupils achieved the three highest grades of 7 to 9 - equivalent to an A or A* - while Elizabeth College said 43% of its pupils got 7 to 9 grades.

The Ladies College said more than half its grades were in the 7-9 bracket and St Anne's School in Alderney said 60% of its results were were at grade 4 or above.

The Guernsey Institute said it had strong results for its Level 2 pupils which "reflected the determination of learners to develop the skills and knowledge".

'Really happy'

St Sampson's High School pupil Mia said she got higher results than she expected, including 5s in science.

The 16-year-old, who said she wants to study psychology at sixth form, added: "I'm quite nervous about going to sixth form but I have quite a few friends who are going there so I'm quite happy."

Her friend James said he was "really happy" with his results which included 5s in English and a 4 in history.

"All through the summer holidays I've been waiting for the results and I'm really happy with what I've got," he said.

Fellow St Sampson's pupil Chloe said while she got slightly lower marks than she achieved in her mocks, she still did "quite well".

Chloe said she was really proud of getting an 8 in music and planned to do economics, environmental science and psychology at sixth form.

"It's going to be quite scary, meeting a lot of new people, but it'll be OK," she said.

At The Ladies' College, Emily said she was "very shocked" to discover her results, which consisted entirely of 9s and 8s.

Emily added: "My parents are really proud of me - I don't think they expected it either but they're also really happy."

Her classmate Lara said it felt like a "surreal experience" when she found out she had received all 9s in the 11 subjects she took.

"I was actually quite pleasantly surprised and really grateful that all my hard work kind of paid off in my results," Lara added.

At Elizabeth College, Oliver said he was feeling very pleased and emotional after putting a lot of work into his exams.

Oliver, who is planning to go to sixth form, said: "Some of the papers were quite difficult and I did a lot better than I expected."

Elizabeth College pupil Herbie scored 9s across all his exams apart from a 7 in English Language.

He said he was planning to celebrate during a family holiday in the south of France, which he said would involve water skiing.

Herbie, who wants to eventually study aerospace engineering at either Oxford University or Imperial College London, added: "It's weird because we've been waiting for so long to get the results and doing all the hard work.

"But I'm happy and looking forward to starting sixth form and doing A-Levels."

Pupils from La Mare de Carteret were marking the end of an era as the final year group collected their GCSE results before the school becomes a temporary sixth form centre.

Thomas had an extra celebration to mark as he collected his results on his 16th birthday.

He ended up with five 6s and two 8s from his exams and said it made all the hard work worthwhile.

"It showed you need to put in the hard work to get the results that you want and deserve," Thomas said.

"If you don't put in the hard work, you won't get what you need."

At Les Varendes, friends Evie, Flo and Lexie said they were all pleased with their results and planned to celebrate at the North Show.

Evie said getting the results was a "big weight" off all of their shoulders.

Flo added: "It was such a long process and going through the exams was difficult with no free time."

Students at The Guernsey Institute also collected their results, including Miks who got a 5 in GCSE maths and an art and design diploma distinction.

The 17-year-old said: "I'm feeling really good.

"I had a lot of nerves but I knew I'd be fine."
