The M6 motorway was closed southbound in Staffordshire after a man was seriously injured in a crash involving a lorry and stationary van.

The van driver in his 20s was standing near to the vehicle, which had broken down, Staffordshire Police said, when the collision happened between junctions 13 and 12 at about midnight on Monday.

He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. The other driver did not report any injuries.

National Highways said at 11:00 that the stretch had reopened, but delays of up to two hours remained.

The injured man, who was off the carriageway, was in a potentially life-threatening condition, the ambulance service said.

He was behind the barrier, administered specialist trauma care and taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Following the earlier closure southbound between junction 13, for Stafford, and 12, for Cannock, National Highways said at 11:00 that two out of four lanes were still closed for completion of emergency barrier and clean-up work at the scene.

The M6 was also closed southbound overnight between junction 12 and 10, for planned roadworks, although that section later reopened.
