Four people have been arrested after a 13-year-old boy was stabbed in "broad daylight in front of horrified onlookers" at a busy railway station, police have said.

British Transport Police (BTP) said he was taken to hospital after the attack at about 12:10 GMT on Tuesday at Manchester Piccadilly.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, while three other boys - one aged 13 and two aged 12 - were detained on suspicion of affray, the force added.

Det Insp Stephen Kite urged anyone who saw the "shocking incident" or had dashcam footage to come forward.

The stabbing happened near the station's short-stay car park by Fairfield Street.

Paramedics took the victim to hospital and he has since been discharged, a BTP spokesman said.

Det Insp Kite said: "We have spoken to a number of witnesses... but we believe there may be other people who saw what happened and have yet to come forward.

"We also believe there were people who had been driving past who may have captured important dashcam footage showing what happened.

"I urge those people to make contact with us as quickly as possible.

"We will not tolerate violence on the railway network and will do everything we can to bring to justice those responsible."
