Fire crews were called to a flat above shops in Station Road at 22:48 BST on Thursday, and brought the blaze under control by midnight.

Police said six men, aged 34, 37, 46, 47, 52 and 60, all from Bognor Regis, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The 37-year-old man was also arrested after a 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries in an assault.

A man who raised the alarm told BBC Radio Sussex he tried to help get people out of the flat.

He said: "I see smoke and I straight away call 999.

"I tried to help but what I saw was huge so I couldn't go in."

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it sent five fire engines and a command vehicle to the scene.

It said the two people rescued were treated with oxygen.
