Police have made a plea to parents after children were reported to have been stamping on the glass roof of a shopping centre.

Leicestershire Police were called to the Bell Centre in Melton Mowbray on Wednesday night.

The call - responded to as the highest priority due to a potential loss of life - came after a child was seen stamping on a glass pane two storeys high.

Issuing an appeal, officers from the Melton beat team said a crack had formed in the glass due to the stamping.

PCSO Claire Gray said while the group ran from the scene, CCTV was being examined to identify those responsible.

She asked parents to talk to their children about the dangers of climbing onto rooftops: “This obviously could have ended up being a much more serious incident, one that we would never like to attend.

“If you aware that your children have been out this evening, particularly between 18:30 and 20:00 in the town centre, please educate them about how utterly dangerous this behaviour is.”
