The new Bishop of Worcester has been announced after his appointment was approved by the King.

Hugh Nelson was confirmed as the 114th bishop for the Diocese of Worcester on Tuesday - he was previously Bishop of St Germans in Truro, Cornwall.

He said it was an "enormous privilege" and that he was looking forward to getting to know the different communities across the diocese.

"The Diocese of Worcester is full of so much that is good and holy," he said. "It plans to double the number of young disciples, create 100 new worshipping communities, renew churches right across the area, and to underpin all this by resourcing clergy and lay leaders."

Bishop Hugh will also continue in his role as Bishop to the Armed Forces, providing spiritual and pastoral leadership to chaplains serving in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

The Bishop of Dudley, Martin Gorick, has served as acting Bishop of Worcester since the retirement of Dr John Inge in October 2024 after almost 17 years in the role.

Upon announcing his retirement, Bishop John said: "I have lived through the best of times and the worst of times in my personal life during those years and am more grateful than I can say for all the love and support I have received."
