Norwich City footballer Shane Duffy has been reprimanded by his manager for derogatory comments he made to a fan on social media.

The centre-back used insulting words while responding to a supporter's criticism on X after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Derby County - the Canaries' seventh after 11 games, which put them in the Championship relegation zone.

The 33-year-old has since apologised for his outburst, and said it came out of "frustration, not a lack of respect for supporters".

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, City boss Liam Manning said: "The positions we are in and the responsibility we hold - irrespective of our opinions and what we think - you can't come out and say that."

He added that Duffy, whose insults included calling someone "a gimp", had been dealt with "internally".

Posting on X on Wednesday, Duffy said: "It's been a tough period, and seeing the criticism towards the team has been hard.

"We have to accept the criticism right now.

"Everyone here cares a lot about performing well, and sometimes emotions get the better of you when things aren't going as planned."

He added: "My comment came out of frustration, not a lack of respect for the supporters — we really do value your passion and backing.

"I apologise for my comments."

In July last year, the Ireland international was banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay more than £27,000 after admitting a drink-drive charge.

He had hit a stationary car in Hethersett, near Norwich, on 6 May, while over the limit.
