A head teacher has written to the parents of students at a high school in Douglas following a pupil's "unexpected death".

Graeme Corrin, of Ballakermeen High School, said it was "with great sadness that I have to tell of the unexpected death of one of our Year 9 pupils".

Mr Corrin said the education department's bereavement response team would be at the school on Thursday to offer its support to students.

The Isle of Man Constabulary confirmed the young person had died "outside of the school environment" and the death was "currently unexplained".

'Further support'

The force said it was "investigating the circumstances on behalf of the coroner" and urged people to "refrain from speculation".

In the letter to parents, Mr Corrin said: "When someone dies it is normal for their friends and family to experience lots of feelings like sadness, anger and confusion."

He said support would be available to students who "may need time to talk things through" and the team would "provide further support and guidance over the coming days".

Mr Corrin thanked parents for their "understanding and support at this very difficult time" and said the school's thoughts were "with the student's family at this very sad time".
