A listed library building's toilet facilities which have been deemed "inadequate" will be improved if new plans are given the go-ahead, a council has pledged.

The toilets at Ilkley Library did "not provide a necessary service to all users", according to Bradford Council.

As a result, it had applied for permission to make alterations to the Grade II listed building.

Under the proposals, the library's toilets would be altered to make them more accessible to disabled users, meanwhile a small kitchenette area would also be created at the rear of the building.

The application for Listed Building Consent stated that the existing toilets were confined to a "rather limited, restricted area of the building".

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the plans stated that the current toilets were "inadequate and, essentially, do not provide necessary service to all users of the library at the ground floor level".

The plans would see an internal partition wall removed to turn a single toilet into a unisex disabled one.

That would mean access to the library was available "to all users, regardless of personal condition", the application added.
