The States of Guernsey has apologised after sharing details of a "scam email" address which actually turned out to be real and safe.

On Monday, it said it had become aware of the email income@gov.gg and warned people it was "not a legitimate" government address.

On Tuesday the States sent out a new statement saying "we need to hold our hands up and apologise" after coming to a "rushed judgement" over the email address.

"We are sorry for the error, which only came to light following further investigations yesterday," it said.

The statement said: "We tried to quickly ascertain whether the email was a potential phishing attack and provide advice to safeguard the community, but in doing so came to a rushed judgement."

It added: "We are grateful to islanders for raising awareness of this potential issue and engaging with us through our investigation."
