Police have been granted extra powers to tackle the anti-social use of fireworks on bonfire night.

Essex Police said dispersal orders would be in place across parts of Canvey Island and Benfleet from 16:00 GMT until 05:00 GMT on Wednesday.

The force said it followed reports of fireworks being "set off irresponsibly" in the area.

Insp David Kealy added: "We have increased and dedicated staff working for Guy Fawkes night to ensure the public remain safe and to deal robustly with offenders."
